The Headphones Come Off

I went for a run yesterday, and I took along my trusty iPod to help pass the time of running for awhile. Toward the end of the run it began to rain, not heavily, just a constant steady drizzle. Right before I went inside when I finished my run I took my headphones off. What did I hear? The gentle patter of rain hitting the leaves of trees. I became much more aware to what was taking place outside. I saw the sun breaking through the clouds as well. I turned around and what did I see? A magnificent double rainbow. The lower bow was very clear, and the upper bow was faint but still very visible.
I was struck by how I eagerly grabbed my iPod before the my run. I didn't allow myself an opportunity to listen as I ran. Granted, much of what I would have been listening to would have been cars and other neighborhood sounds, but I could have still been more present without my headphones. Once again I wonder how often in my life I fail to "take off the headphones." How often do I fill my life with distractions?
